Rooney joins great PL long shots

Asked if he had ever scored a better goal, Rooney said: "I don't think so. "It's one of – if not the – best goals I've scored. I hit it as well as I've ever kicked a football. To make it my first hat-trick for Everton, I'm delighted." The spectacular strike on Wednesday has sparked debate about which is the best long-distance goal in Premier League history. Some of the other contenders: Wayne Rooney v West Ham United, March 2014 Rooney's mesmerising strike against West Ham was not his first goal from a stupendous distance. It was not even the first goal of its type he has scored against West Ham. La Liga, which runs the top two divisions of Spanish soccer, believes it can close the gap in revenues between it and the English Premier League in the next 10 years with an ambitious plan to expand its international audience. Javier Tebas, La Liga's president, said the Premier League earned about 40 percent more that the Spanish league, which draws in some 1.7 billion euros ($2 billion) a year in television rights. "I have no doubt that within 10 years we will practically be equal to the Premier League or at least within 10 percent," he said at the opening of a La Liga office in Brussels. The main difference for now was that the British market itself was bigger than Spain's. "On an international level there is less of a difference, but that's our main objective – to get closer to the Premier League," Tebas said late on Tuesday La Liga, which already dominates in Latin America, has now set its sights on gaining ground in key markets China, I

Modric accused of tax fraud

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric became the latest football star in Spain accused by prosecutors of committing tax fraud on revenue from his image rights, a court filing revealed on Wednesday. Prosecutors believe the Croatian, whose wife Vadja is also cited in the accusation, evaded €870 728 in 2013 and 2014 via a shell company set up in Luxembourg. However, that figure could rise once details of financial holdings belonging to the player in the Isle of Man are revealed to Spanish authorities. Modric, 32, joined Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur for a reported fee of £30 million in 2012. He is just the latest in a series of star players based in Spain to be accused of tax fraud on income related to image rights in the past few years. On Tuesday, Madrid left-back Marcelo admitted to a €490 917 tax fraud via his image rights in 2013. Nigerian Migrants Arrive From Libya

It was a huge sigh of relief for the latest set of Nigerian migrants who returned safely from Libya last night, Tuesday, November 28, 2017 amid ongoing horrible tales of booming slave trade in the North African country. The migrants, 242 in number including 148 men, 45 women and 46 children touched down at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos aboard a Libyan Airline flight. The Nigerian Government in collaboration with IOM (International Organization of Migration) have been working together in facilitating the return of Nigerian migrants in Libya for over a year now. Most of these migrants had traveled illegally through the desert and crossed into Libya in hopes of reaching Italy, which is separated from the war-torn country by the Mediterranean sea. While few make the tortuous journey across sea into the European country, others drown even before reaching their dream destination and more find themselves in tight situations when they get to Libya as they are thr

Bale returns to help Real progress

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale returned from injury in style by coming on to create two goals for Borja Mayoral in a 2-2 second-leg draw with third-tier Fuenlabrada as their second-string side took them into the King's Cup last 16 on Tuesday. Real won 4-2 on aggregate and Bale's cameo performance was one of few bright spots on a nervy evening for the hosts at the Santiago Bernabeu during which the Liga and European champions were in serious danger of being forced to play extra time. Welsh international Bale brought badly needed quality to Zinedine Zidane's struggling side with a substitute appearance after 63 days out with injuries and had an instant impact. With Real behind on the night after conceding an early goal, Bale picked up the ball after coming on to a smattering of applause and curled over a cross for Mayoral to head an equaliser in the 63rd minute which effectively ended the tie. Bale also made Real's second goal, skipping into the area to force

Allardyce and Pardew set for Premier League returns’

Sam Allardyce and Alan Pardew could both return to the Premier League as managers of Everton and West Bromwich Albion respectively as soon as Wednesday, according to British media reports. With both clubs just two points above the bottom three, the experienced English duo's history of keeping clubs in the Premier League has led to them being linked with two sides desperately battling to beat the drop. Staying up is now the overwhelming priority for many Premier League clubs, which is hardly surprising given teams are assured of £100 million ($134 million, 113 million euros) in broadcast revenue simply for remaining in English football's lucrative top flight. Reports in several British newspapers said representatives of Allardyce – whose time as England manager was ended after just one game by a newspaper sting – had been having talks with Everton. They added Allardyce could be unveiled as the permanent successor to Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park before Everton's

The Madrid vice-captain's admission of guilt is a first step in a deal he is trying to cut with Spanish prosecutors and officials. Once drafted, the prospective agreement will be presented to a judge. It will probably include a four-month suspended prison sentence and an additional fine equivalent to 40 per cent of the sum he hid from the tax man.
