Seven natural remedies for kidney stones

Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys or urinary tract. Also called nephrolithiasis, one in every 20 people develop kidney stones at some point in their life. Treatment includes pain relievers and drinking lots of water to help pass the stone. Medical procedures may be required to remove or break up larger stones. Here are seven natural preventive measures you should take to avoid kidney stones. Pomegranate juice The antioxidants and natural astringent properties of this fruit can help to break up kidney stones when these nutrients reach the kidney and prevent high oxalate levels in the body. Drinking one glass each day should be a good preventative measure for the stones’ development. Watermelon Watermelon is a potassium-packed fruit that can help combat kidney stones, particularly those formed of magnesium and calcium phosphates. Potassium is integral to lowering acid levels in the urine, which can prevent the

Habib Aruna, chief press secretary to Lagos governor, quoted the vice-president as saying the federal government was deeply saddened by the tragedy. “I am here to commiserate with the government and people of Lagos state on the tragedy that occurred just yesterday. It’s a very terrible thing and all of us were deeply saddened by it,” the VP was quoted as saying. “Before Mr. President left this morning he asked me to express his sincere condolences to his Excellency and also to the people of the State. It’s a very deeply saddening event and we pray this sort of thing will never repeat itself. “We also hope that all of those w

Wema Bank appoints new MD as Oloketuyi retires

Wema Bank Plc. has appointed Ademola Adebise as its chief executive officer after the retirement of Segun Oloketuyi . In a statement released yesterday by Funmilayo Falola, its brand and communications manager, the bank thanked Oloketuyi for his service to the country. At present, Adebise is the deputy managing director of the bank. His predecessor, Oloketuyi was appointed CEO of the bank in 2009; just after the 2008 banking crisis. “At the time, Wema Bank had negative retained earnings in excess of N45 billion and was declared a bank in grave financial situation by the regulatory authority,” the statement read. “As part of a turnaround plan which Mr Oloketuyi led, the bank also regained its national banking license from the Central Bank of Nigeria, which has allowed it to expand to the Northern and Eastern parts of the country, significantly increasing its market share and customer base in the process.” Oloketuyi is expected to proceed on a terminal leave from July 1.

Federal Government begins disbursement of $320m as Switzerland says Abacha loot fully returned

The federal government says it will commence disbursement of the recovered $320 million Abacha loot to 302,000 poor households in 19 states in July. In May, President Muhammadu Buhari had said the recovered loot will be put into the conditional cash transfers (CCT) scheme targeted at the “poorest of Nigerians”. Tukur Rumar, representative of the National Cash Transfer Office (NCTO), on Thursday listed Niger, Kogi, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Kwara, Cross River, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Nasarrawa, Anambra and internally displaced camps (IDPs) in Borno as the beneficiaries. Rumar said the benefiting households will receive N5, 000 monthly. He said the NCTO had been making payments to 46,000 poor and vulnerable households across the 19 states since December 2016, adding that the number had increased to 290,000. Iorwa Apera, national coordinator, National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO), said 503,055 households were alre

AC Milan banned from European competitions for two seasons

UEFA has handed AC Milan a two-year ban from European competitions following a breach of FFP rules. The Italian giants finished sixth in Serie A last season to secure their spot in next season’s Europa League. But they will not be taking part in the competition after UEFA confirmed they had breached FFP guidelines. Milan will be excluded from participating in 2018/19 and the next season even if they qualify for one of Europe’s competitions. Milan were taken over in 2016 and spent over £170m on new players last summer, including Italian defender Leonardo Bonucci and Portugal striker Andre Silva. A UEFA statement read: “The Adjudicatory Chamber of the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), chaired by José Narciso da Cunha Rodrigues, has taken a decision in the case of the club AC Milan that had been referred to it by the CFCB Chief Investigator for the breach of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations, in particular the break-even requirement. “The club is

In London, Uber has won the battle but risks losing the war

The sighs of relief are palpable. Uber can keep operating in London. With 3.6 million customers, 45,000 drivers and a slew of reforms, changes and concessions already made to Transport for London (TfL), most observers expected Uber to win a reprieve — and they did. Uber passed the first of two tests. The second test is a little less obvious — and a lot harder. Being able to navigate the political climate in Europe demands that Uber not only demonstrate contrition, but implement real change too. But if Uber loses sight of who the end user is, winning the battle in London doesn’t eliminate the risk of losing the entire war everywhere. Here’s the thing: Regulation is neither inherently good nor bad. Taxi regulation wasn’t all fundamentally evil and corrupt when Travis Kalanick ran Uber and it’s not all fundamentally necessary and appropriate under Dara Khosrowshahi’s reign either. That’s because there are no laws of nature on how ridesharing — or even transit in any form — should o

Huawei's first 5G phone is coming next year

5G is the next tech revolution. Slated to launch around 2020, Huawei is getting a head start. The company's first 5G phone will go on sale next year, it announced at Mobile World Congress Shanghai, sometime before the end of June 2019. It'll follow Huawei's first 5G Kirin chip, which it says will come in March. Earlier this year, 18 phone makers committed to releasing a 5G phone sometime in 2019. LG, HTC and Xiaomi were on that list, but Huawei was conspicuously absent. Apple and Samsung, the world's biggest phone makers, still haven't made their 5G plans clear. There's a tidal wave of hype surrounding 5G, the next-generation wireless technology that promises to be significantly faster and more responsive than anything before it. In some cases -- such as its potential application in self-driving cars, telemedicine, the trend of devices called internet of things -- it can be life-changing. How long those promises take to be realised, we don't know.

Drake hails Wizkid, Tekno for inspiring his new album

Hours after releasing his fifth studio album, Drake has hailed Nigerian singers Wizkid and Tekno for inspiring the new project. The Canadian rapper took to his Instagram Story to give shout-outs to the artistes that inspired him on his studio drive and the Nigerian Afro-pop stars were listed. “Thank you to all the artistes that inspired me on the studio drives,” the ‘God’s Plan’ rapper said. Drake also shared screenshots of the albums or singles of the artistes that inspired him. Tekno’s ‘Jogodo’ and Wizkid’s ‘Soco’ (feat. Terri, Spotless, Ceeza Milli) were among Drake’s go-to tunes for inspiration. The Grammy-winning rapper has previously collaborated with Wizkid on ‘Come Closer’, and was also seen in the studio with Tekno a few months ago. The rapper also gave special mentions to 2Pac’s ‘All Eyez On Me’ and Boogz’s ‘The Suite Life 101 EP’. Drake’s ‘Scorpion’ is a double album which comprises of 25 tracks featuring a slew of top artistes including Micheal Jackson, Ja

Rihanna, Kanye West among TIME’s 25 most influential people on the internet

Kanye West and Rihanna have been listed among TIME’s 25 most influential people on the internet in 2018. The music icons stood out as the biggest music names on TIME’s online radar, majorly because of their cultural impact, entrepreneurship and huge following on social media sites. Rihanna denounced Snapchat for ridiculing her domestic violence experience. Her criticism plummeted the company’s financial value. The pop star has been a voice for women over the years and is also using her beauty and fashion line to inspire women who feel undesired. Her influence was summarised by Eliza Berman in a description for TIME. “When Rihanna speaks—or, more precisely, ‘grams—the world listens,” Berman said. Another famous music icon to make the list is Kanye West. However, West has a different relationship with the social media world, as he regularly posts controversial quotes and pictures. The rapper infamously posted a picture of a signed Donald Trump’s hat with the slogan ‘Make

Ed Sheeran sued for ‘copying’ Marvin Gaye’s song

Ed Sheeran, British singer, is facing a $100 million lawsuit for allegedly ripping off a Marvin Gaye song. Structured Asset Sales, the company which filed the lawsuit, is claiming Sheeran’s song ‘Thinking Out Loud’ is a carbon copy of Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get it On’. According to a TMZ report, the lawsuit claims Sheeran’s song has the same melody, rhythms, harmonies, drums, bassline, backing chorus, tempo, syncopation and looping as ‘Let’s Get it On’. ‘Thinking Out Loud’ has become an international hit since it was released in 2016, earning Sheeran three Grammy nominations. It has more than 2.3 billion views on YouTube, and the album which it’s on, ‘X’, has sold more than 15 million copies. ‘Let’s Get it On’ was originally written by Edward Townsend and Gaye in 1973. When Townsend died in 2003, one-third of the rights to the song were purchased by Structured Asset Sales. The British singer was also sued by Townsend’s family in 2016.

Good news as WHO unveils drug to tackle excessive bleeding at childbirth

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says a new drug – Carbetocin – has the potential to save thousands of women’s lives in childbirth annually. WHO said Carbetocin now serves as a new competition – with improved benefits – to Oxytocin, a standby drug used to prevent potentially-fatal bleeding after childbirth. WHO said excessive bleeding after childbirth still kills around 70,000 mothers a year and currently, Oxytocin is the first-choice medication, but it must be kept cold, unlike the new drug, Carbetocin. The study, partly led, among others, by WHO and published on Wednesday, suggested that the new drug which could be stored at normal temperatures, could save the lives of thousands in low- and lower-middle-income countries. “This is a truly encouraging new development that can revolutionise our ability to keep mothers and babies alive,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. WHO said since Oxytocin must be stored and transported at a cool two to eight degr

Falana challenges n’assembly to point out a law giving it power to rewrite budget

Femi Falana, human rights lawyer,  says the national assembly has no constitutional right to rewrite and pass the budget. On June 20, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the 2018 appropriation bill into law. Buhari had said the national assembly increased its budget from N125 billion to N139.5 billion He also said the lawmakers added 6,403 projects of their own to the 2018 budget proposal sent to them, while they cut the appropriation for some key projects. Speaking in an interview with PUNCH newspaper,  Falana said the Buhari administration is to blame for alteration done to the budget. According to him, it is the “unprecedented official impunity permitted by the President that has encouraged the national assembly to continue the illegality of rewriting and jerking up the budget”. The senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) also expressed concern over the delay in signing the budget into law. He described the delay as “the height of impunity on the part of both the executive a

The number of vehicles affected is 20+, the traffic situation is at standstill, all alternative routes advised at the moment,” it said. “Please be advised that the effect of this fire incident will be colossal in the next few minutes. Experts call for early release, increased funds to Nigerian farmers

A civic group, ActionAid Nigeria, has called on government at all levels and banks in Nigeria to increase their funding of the agriculture sector and to ensure early release of funds to farmers. This was the consensus at a stakeholders meeting in Lagos on the 2019 Agriculture Budget. Participants at the meeting organised by the Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning, ActionAid, Oxfam and ECOWAS agreed that the current two per cent of the federal budget allocated to the sector is inadequate. The allocation is below the 10 per cent benchmark recommended by the African Union at a summit in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea in June 2014. At the summit, Heads of State and Government adopted a set of concrete goals to be attained by 2025 in the agriculture sector in the continent. The summit reconfirmed that agriculture should remain high on the development agenda of the continent, saying it is a critical policy initiative for African economic growth and poverty reduction. S

CBN injects $210m into Forex market

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has injected $210 million into the foreign exchange market (Forex) to meet customers’ requests in various segments, Isaac Okorafor, Acting Director, Corporate Communications says. He recalled that the bank, on Thursday, intervened with $210 million dollars to cater for requests in the wholesale segment of the Forex market. Tramadol ban gives rise to new psychoactive substances – NDLEA

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says the ban placed on tramadol has given rise to other forms of psychoactive stimulants. The NDLEA Commander in Yobe, Apeh Reupen, disclosed this while speaking at the 2018 commemoration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Damaturu. “Many emerging psychoactive substances are now being marketed in replacement of tramadol. The potency of these locally invented drugs is similar to the synthetic one. “The emerging problem of the new psychoactive substances especially among the youth in the state is becoming a matter of serious concern,” Mr Reupen said. He added: “In spite of our campaign to reduce drug trafficking and abuse, record available still shows that the arrest and seizure of illicit drugs is on the increase.” Mr Reupen, therefore, appealed to states government and individual organisations to support the war against drug abuse. “I call on all and sundry to rise to the occasion and wa

Russia 2018: Nigeria out of World Cup after Argentina loss

A goal four minutes from time from Argentina’s left back, Marcus Rojo, took Argentina into the second round as they defeated Nigeria 2-1. Lionel Messi gave Argentina the lead on 14 minutes. Victor Moses equalised six minutes into the second half but Rojo scored the most important goal with four minutes left on the clock. With Croatia beating Iceland, Argentina snagged second place and will meet France in the round of 16, while Croatia will face Denmark. William Troost-Ekong kicked the ball out straight from kickoff to show the pressure that was on the Super Eagles. The Argentina setup put Lionel Messi on the right of a front three of Gonzalo Higuain, Messi, and Angel Di Maria. In the first five minutes, the Argentines had more than 70% of the ball possession; but the first shot did not arrive until the sixth minute when Tagliafico controlled an Ever Banega ball in the box but after holding off the challenges of Victor Moses and Leon Balogun, shot wide. Ahmed Musa tried a sho

President Buhari visits Plateau, calls for peace

President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the commitment of the federal government to bring an end to the killings in Plateau State. Mr Buhari stated this Tuesday in Jos at the Government House during a security meeting with warring factions in the Barkin Ladi violence that claimed over 86 lives over the weekend. He arrived at about 4.14 p.m., and proceeded into the meeting immediately. The meeting later went into a closed-door session, with only the affected community leaders and top government officials allowed in. The Deputy governor of Plateau State, Sonni Tyoden, was also present at the meeting. A credible source who attended the meeting confirmed that one of the Berom speaking representatives at the meeting lamented that the attackers could be foreigners ”harbored by indigenous herdsmen who had lived peacefully with the natives over the years.” He said Berom representatives at the meeting lamented inadequate security within the communities. Oil prices rise amidst uncertainty over Libyan crude exports

Oil prices rose, Tuesday on uncertainty over Libyan oil exports, although plans by producer cartel OPEC to raise output loom. Brent sweet crude futures, the international benchmark for oil prices, were at 74.95 dollars per barrel at 01.04 GMT, up 22 cents, or 0.3 per cent from their last close. The United States West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at 68.33 dollars a barrel, up 25 cents, or 0.4 per cent. Traders said prices were mostly driven higher by uncertainty around oil exports by Libya, a member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Eastern Libyan commander, Khalifa Haftar’s forces have handed control of oil ports to a separate National Oil Corporation (NOC) based in the East of the country. The official state-owned oil company based in the capital Tripoli, also called NOC, will not be allowed to handle that oil anymore, he said. In comments later confirmed to the media, Ahmed Mismari, spokesman of Haftar’s Libya National Army

Movie academy invites 928 new members in diversity push

The group that hands out the Oscars has announced that it had invited 928 new members from 59 countries, in its biggest diversity drive after years of criticism of its mostly white and male membership. Those invited include “Girls Trip” star Tiffany Haddish; “The Big Sick” co-writers Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon; and comedian and actor Dave Chappelle, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said in a statement. If all those invited accept, female membership would rise to 31 percent from the current 28 percent, the group said. People of color will increase to 16 percent from 13 percent. Total membership would stand at more than 7,000 actors, writers, directors, executives and others. A lack of diversity within the academy has long been cited as a barrier to racial inclusion in Hollywood’s highest honors. In 2016, the Academy responded by pledging to double female and minority membership by 2020.

Uber to learn London license fate with judge's ruling Today

Uber [UBER.UL] will hear on Tuesday if a bid to overturn a ruling stripping it of its license to operate in London has succeeded, after a court heard about its difficult relationship with the city’s transport regulator. The taxi-hailing app overhauled its policies and personnel in Britain after Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew its license in September for failings in its approach to reporting serious criminal offences and background checks on drivers. “We’ve had five years of a very difficult relationship, where Uber has felt that it hasn’t required regulation,” TfL’s licensing director Helen Chapman told the court on Tuesday, adding it had been “frankly frustrating” that issues TfL should have been aware of were first reported in the media. While the appeal process is ongoing, Uber can continue to operate in the city, and Tuesday’s decision can also be appealed, meaning the whole legal process could take years. With backers including Goldman Sachs (GS.N) and Blac

AT&T to buy online ad exchange firm AppNexus

AT&T Inc (T.N) has expressed their intention to buy online advertisement exchange company AppNexus Inc, less than a month after the No. 2 U.S. wireless carrier closed its $85 billion deal to acquire media company Time Warner Inc TWX.N. AT&T did not disclose the AppNexus deal value. The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, reported last week the company was in talks to buy AppNexus for about $1.6 billion. AppNexus, which runs a digital platform for advertisers to purchase online ads, will become part of AT&T advertising & analytics, as the U.S. telecom company aims to expand its online advertising to better compete with Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google and Facebook Inc (FB.O). The company will start selling targeted ads for Turner networks such as TNT and CNN “in short order,” John Stankey, chief executive of newly named AT&T unit WarnerMedia had said last week. “Think of this as buying a sofa to furnish the new house (Time Warner) they just bought,” said

Chechnya leader makes Mo Salah honorary citizen

Chechnya leader Ramzan Kadyrov has made Egypt’s talismanic striker Mohamed Salah an honorary citizen of the southern Russian region at a farewell banquet held for the eliminated World Cup side. Rights groups and Western governments allege that authorities in Chechnya repress their political opponents, discriminate against women and persecute sexual minorities, all allegations that Chechnya’s leaders deny. Chechnya has been hosting the Egyptian team’s World Cup training camp and Kremlin-backed Kadyrov has seized on opportunities to appear alongside Salah. Sarah’s goalscoring exploits for Liverpool and Egypt have made him an international superstar. “Mohamed Salah is an honorary citizen of the Chechen Republic. “Yes, that’s right! Tonight I signed a decree conferring this high award on the great footballer and member of the Egypt and Liverpool teams,” Kadyrov wrote on Telegram. Salah was presented with a badge and a copy of the decree at the dinner, Kadyrov said. The Egy

A former bodyguard of deceased al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden who is living in Germany was arrested on Monday as the German state gears up to deport the Tunisian following a change in his legal status. “The state agency responsible for refugees and migrants, BAMF, has lifted a deportation ban on the man,’’ a spokesman for the western city of Bochum, where the Tunisian resides, said on Monday. According to the spokesman, the lift on the ban clears the way for his deportation. He said that authorities were preparing to have him sent back to Tunisia. The Tunisian, identified only as Sami A in keeping with German privacy laws, was classified by the German state in April as a “Gefaehrder,” a term used to designate people willing and prepared to commit acts of terrorism. Detention: Ex-NSA Dasuki to know fate on July 2

A Federal High Court in Abuja will on July 2 deliver judgment on the about three years detention of the immediate-past National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki. The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court slated the date to deliver judgment in the fundamental rights enforcement suit that Mr Dasuki filed against the federal government over his continued detention after being granted bail by different courts since 2015. Mr Dasuki who served as the NSA under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, is challenging legality of his prolonged detention since November 3, 2015, despite the fact that he was granted bail by four different trial courts. He is praying the court to declare his detention illegal and to award him N5 billion as general damages and compensation for gross violation of his fundamental rights. Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu adjourned the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/263/2018 for judgment, after all the parties adopted their final briefs of argument. Cited as respondents in the suit w
