Lagos orders markets, restaurants to reopen

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed the reopening of markets on selected days in the state. He spoke during a televised press conference on Wednesday. The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, in a series of tweets, said the governor also ordered that schools should remain closed. Sanwo-Olu also banned vehicles carrying foods of more than seven passengers into and out of Lagos. Bundesliga could return in May – German sports ministers

The Ministers of Sports in Germany’s 16 States have announced the possibility of the league resuming in empty Stadia from the middle or end of May. In a statement by the Sports Ministers after their meeting on Monday, they pointed out that it’s “justifiable” for the league to resume “in empty stadiums” from “the middle or end of May”. They also highlighted the need for the league to “create and enforce the strictest hygienic and medical conditions, and monitor them with appropriate measures.” This decision will be subjected to the ratification of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel who will be meeting with leaders of the 16 States in Berlin on Thursday. Presidency clears air on reopening of schools

The Presidency has made clarifications on school resumption following the gradual relaxation of the lockdown. President Buhari had ordered a gradual relaxation of the lockdown starting from Monday next week but was silent on the reopening of schools. However, Buhari’s spokesperson, Femi Adesina while featuring on TVC, said schools may re-open for those about to take exams. Adesina said candidates about to take West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and other examinations may be allowed to go back to school. NNPC filling station inferno claims 30 vehicles – LASEMA

The Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, on Tuesday said the fire outbreak at Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) filling station, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, has destroyed 30 vehicles. The filling station is located at YayaYaya Abatan bus Stop, off Colleage Road, Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State. CBN lifts suspension on cheque clearing

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has lifted suspension placed on cheque instruments in the Nigerian clearing system. Consequently, cheque instruments will be allowed to pass through the clearing system from today, April 28. In a circular to banks and Nigeria Interbank Settlement system (NIBSS), CBN Director, Banking Services Department, Sam Okojere, said the bank lifted the temporary suspension of cheque clearing in Nigeria to make payment efficient for customers. He said the move was in furtherance of CBN’s effort in the development of a safe and efficient payment system in Nigeria. Okojere said the decision to lift the suspension was taken by the CBN in collaboration with relevant stakeholders after reviewing the need for cheque clearing to accommodate users of cheque as one of the payment instruments in Nigeria, despite some lockdown in some states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT). FIFA has proposed that teams should be allowed to make up to five substitutions per match, instead of the usual three, as a temporary measure to help cope with potential fixture congestion in the aftermath of the novel Coronavirus outbreak. Not less than 18 people suspected to be commercial sex workers and their customers were arrested by the Ondo State Task Force on COVID-19 while monitoring the compliance rate within the state capital. The people were said to have flouted the order of the state government on the dusk-to-dawn curfew order imposed by the Ondo State Government. More than 700 die in Iran after drinking alcohol to cure coronavirus

Over 700 people have died in Iran after ingesting toxic methanol, erroneously thinking it can cure the new coronavirus. The national coroner’s authority said that alcohol poisoning killed 728 Iranians between February 20 and April 7. Last year there were only 66 deaths from alcohol poisoning, according to the report. Alcohol poisoning has seen a 10-fold increase in Iran in the past year, according to a government report released earlier in April, amid the coronavirus pandemic. Iranian health ministry spokesman, Kianoush Jahanpour, said 5,011 people had been poisoned from methanol alcohol, adding that some 90 people have lost their eyesight or are suffering eye damage from the alcohol poisoning. President Buhari declares overnight curfew from Monday

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared an overnight curfew from 8pm to 6am nationwide as part of efforts to curtail the spread of COVID-19. He has also ordered what he called “phased and gradual easing: of lockdown measures in the FCT, Lagos and Ogun States effective from Monday. President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and the country’s capital city Abuja by a week. “The lockdown in the FCT, Lagos & Ogun States shall subsist remain in place until these new ones come into effect on Saturday, 2nd May 2020 at 9 am,” Buhari said in his national broadcast. Governors of the 36 states of the federation have unanimously agreed to the implementation of an inter-state lockdown over the next two weeks to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. IPPIS: President Buhari orders salary payment of lecturers as coronavirus palliative

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the salary payment of February and March for lecturers in federal universities who have not registered on the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS). Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, disclosed this through a statement issued by Emmanuel Nzomiwu, his media aide. “The President also directed the Hon. Minister of Finance, Budget and Planning, and the Accountant General of the Federation to effect the payment urgently by all means to cushion the effects of COVID-19 pandemic lockdown period on lecturers and members of their family,” the statement read. Vice-chancellors were also requested to confirm and forward the bank verification numbers (BVN) of the affected lecturers to the accountant-general of the federation for the payments to be effected. Nigeria’s foremost brewer, Nigerian Breweries Plc has announced a donation of six Hundred Million Naira (N600,000,000.00) to the Federal and some state governments, as part of efforts to support the fight against COVID-19, the Corporate Affairs Director of the company, Sade Morgan, said in a statement. The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) market capitalisation today 21/04/2020. inched lower by N152 billion, amid sell pressure in 27 stocks. Specifically, the market capitalisation which opened at N11.945 trillion lost N152 billion or 1.27 per cent to close at N11.794 trillion. Also, the All-Share Index (ASI) dipped 290.49 points or 1.27 per cent to close at 22,629.92 compared with 22,920.41 on Monday. The downturn was impacted by losses recorded in medium and large capitalised stocks, amongst which were; Guaranty Trust Bank, Julius Berger, Zenith Bank, Lafarge Africa and Seplat. NSCDC distributes face masks to officials, embarks on more production

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSSDC), Lagos command, has distributed 500 home made and customised face masks to its officials, newsmen report. Checks by newsmen earlier today revealed that the face masks were the first batch produced and they were distributed to the officials on Monday, as part of effort to combat the spread of Covid-19 in work environment. The command is also set to embark on more productions to ensure the corps have enough Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to safeguard them while on duty. Recall that the Federal Government recently appealed to tailors to commence the production of face masks to ease its shortages in the country. The NSCDC Lagos State boss, Commandant Adeyinka Ayinla told newsmen that the face masks were given to officials free. “I have also directed that no official must embark on any task without using face mask, they must strictly comply or face sanctions,” Ayinla said. In line with the social distancing guideline on COVID-19, Dana Air has announced that it will keep the middle seats on all its aircraft empty upon resumption of flights. The Accountable Manager of Dana Air, Obi Mbanuzuo, said Dana Air will commence this initiative when flights resume, maintain it for a while and listen to the feedback from the airline’s customers. As part of its efforts to improve the livelihood of its host communities, Nestlé Nigeria has contributed over N700 million to support the COVID-19 response efforts in Nigeria. The Oyo State government has given seven days ultimatum to market leaders in the state to ensure that markets have various handwashing points or risk being closed. Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security, Fatai Owoseni, sounded this warning, on Monday, during a meeting with leaders of markets on traders complying with COVID-19 regulations. Noting that the state government had earlier given the markets samples of the handwashing facility, which have largely been vandalised, Owoseni said it had become mandatory for the markets to multiply the samples within the next one week. NCDC confirms 86 new Coronavirus cases, Lagos takes the lead

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) just confirmed 86 new Coronavirus cases in the country. This was announced by the Centre via its official Twitter page stating that 70 cases were reported in Lagos, 7 in FCT, 3 in Katsina, 3 in Akwa Ibom and one each in Jigawa, Bauchi and Borno. With 70 new cases in Lagos, NCDC revealed in a follow up tweet that there are now 376 confirmed cases in the state, which is the worst-hit state in the country. On Saturday night NCDC announced forty-eight new cases in Nigeria. As at yesterday, the centre in its tweet also stated that there here were 493 Coronavirus cases reported in Nigeria, 159 discharged and 17 deaths. However, with the new cases announced today, there are now 627 cases of Coronavirus, 170 discharged and 21 deaths across the country.
