CBN’s forex restriction on milk is to punish Nigerians for rejecting RUGA - Oby Ezekwesili

Oby Ezekwesili has reacted to CBN’s plan to place Forex restriction on the importation of milk, and according to her, it is punishment to Nigerians for rejecting the proposed RUGA settlement. CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, while addressing newsmen at the end of the bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Abuja during the week, said between $1.2 billion and $1.5 billion is spent yearly to import milk into the country. He further pleaded with milk importers to help the FG reduce the rate of farmers-herders conflict. However reacting to this, Oby Ezekwesili alleged that the proposed ban was borne out vindictiveness. The former Minister of Education pointed out that Nigeria has the highest number of children less than 5 years with chronic malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa, and she added that a milk importation ban is dangerous for the poor. She tweeted; “Nothing more perverse of Political Leaders and Policy Makers as Policies borne out of Vindictiveness. ”It

US approves merger of wireless operators T-Mobile, Sprint

US antitrust authorities on Friday approved the $26 billion merger of T-Mobile and Sprint in a deal that brings together the third- and fourth-largest wireless operators as the industry moves toward deployment of superfast 5G networks. The tie-up aims to create a strong number three US operator to compete against sector leaders Verizon and AT&T and expedite 5G deployment, but consumer groups have complained it would mean reduced competition and higher prices. The deal calls for Sprint to sell some of its prepaid wireless operations to satellite TV operator Dish Network, which would create its own telecom service. “With this merger and accompanying divestiture, we are expanding output significantly by ensuring that large amounts of currently unused or underused spectrum are made available to American consumers in the form of high quality 5G networks,” said Makan Delrahim, head of the Justice Department’s antitrust division. Delrahim added that the agreement would provide D

Trump threatens not to recognize China's special status at WTO

President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to withdraw recognition of the special “developing nation” status of China and other relatively rich countries at the World Trade Organization unless changes are made to the body’s rules. The salvo fell the week before top US trade officials are due to return to China to rekindle trade talks that acrimoniously collapsed in May. Trump said in a statement the global trade body uses “an outdated dichotomy between developed and developing countries that has allowed some WTO members to gain unfair advantages.” Without “substantial progress” to reform WTO rules within 90 days, Washington will no longer treat as a developing country any WTO member “improperly declaring itself a developing country and inappropriately seeking the benefit of flexibilities in WTO rules and negotiations,” the statement said. While the statement points to multiple countries that benefit from the designation, it focuses mostly on China. “The WTO is BROKEN when
