The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, says it has successfully delivered a 68-year-old woman of a set of twins, following an IVF conception. Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, Chairman, LUTH Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), told newsmen on Sunday that the woman was pregnant for the first time. Adeyemo said that she was delivered on April 14 through an elective Caesarean section, at 37 weeks gestation. He said that the IVF and embryo transfer were done at a facility outside LUTH. Adeyemo further said that the woman was, thereafter, referred to LUTH at early gestation and was subsequently managed till she was delivered. “This is the first in LUTH, Nigeria and Africa,” he said, adding that both the mother and the babies were in good conditions.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Kwara State has donated personal protective items to the state government in the support of the war against COVID-19 pandemic. The items, which were produced by the NYSC corps members in the state, include hand sanitizers, antiseptic, liquid soap, among other disinfectant materials. Presenting the materials to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, through the state deputy governor, Mr Kayode Alabi, in Ilorin on Friday, the state coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Francisca Olaleye, leading a team during the presentation, said that the  Director-General and management of the scheme have been supporting and complementing efforts of the government at all levels in the fight against the pandemic. Dubai-based airline Emirates has started carrying out COVID-19 blood tests on passengers at the airport prior to flights. According to a statement released by the airline, the first rapid COVID-19 blood tests took place on Wednesday at Dubai International Airport, with passengers on a flight to Tunisia all reportedly tested before departure. The tests were conducted by the Dubai Health Authority at the Group Check-in area of Terminal 3 and results were available within 10 minutes. “We are working on plans to scale up testing capabilities in the future and extend it to other flights,” said Adel Al Redha, Emirates Chief Operating Officer, in the statement. “This will enable us to conduct on-site tests and provide immediate confirmation for Emirates passengers travelling to countries that require COVID-19 test certificates.” The airline has not stated whether any passengers would be refused boarding based on the results of the test. Not less than 60,000 households in Benue State, are to benefit from the Federal Government’s N5,000 cash transfers. The State Commissioner for Finance and Economics, Mr David Olofu, stated this in Makurdi today, while speaking with newsmen. According to the commissioner, the N5,000 cash transfer is a component of the National Social Investment programme that was initially meant for the poorest of the poor in every community across the country. The Ikorodu General Hospital has recorded a suspected COVID-19 related death. A reliable source told newsmen that the deceased, a woman, was rushed to the hospital by her relatives on April 12 for treatment. According to the source, the deceased patient presented Kidney failure, but was discovered to be manifesting suspected COVID-19 symptoms. “Relations of the deceased patient was advised to take the woman to the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, Lagos for COVID-19 screening. “Against medical advice, the deceased patient was, however, taken back home by relatives. “But, she was brought back to the hospital and presented her at the Emergency Centre the following night in critical condition,” NAN gathered.
