60,000 households qualify for FG’s N5,000 cash transfer in Benue State

Not less than 60,000 households in Benue State, are to benefit from the Federal Government’s N5,000 cash transfers.

The State Commissioner for Finance and Economics, Mr David Olofu, stated this in Makurdi today, while speaking with newsmen.

According to the commissioner, the N5,000 cash transfer is a component of the National Social Investment programme that was initially meant for the poorest of the poor in every community across the country.

He noted that with the approval of the governor, Benue State is one of the first few states to key into the National Social Investment Programme of the federal government and one key component of that programme is the conditional cash transfer.

“The federal government has renewed its commitment to the programme because of the COVID-19, and I’m aware that at the last count, over 60,000 households have qualified for disbursement and very soon they will begin to access the funds directly.

“The template for disbursement is determined by the federal government particularly the Social Investment office under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and am sure that when the distribution will be done, it will be in line with established guidelines and template.

Olofu said that Benue State is fully responsible in making sure that the logistics; office accommodation and some other recurrent expenditure, are provided, being one of the qualifying criteria.

Kenyan Law Court dismisses case of man seeking compensation after his wife eloped with another man from hospital

A lawsuit filed by a man seeking to be compensated by St Mary's Mission Hospital in Kenya for allowing his wife to leave the hospital with another man after giving birth, has been struck out by a law court. The appellant had sued the St. Mary's Mission hospital at Kakamega law courts in 2020 seeking general damages from the facility on grounds that the hospital had discharged his wife and allowed her to leave with another man. After delivering and at the time of discharge, the wife of the appellant claimed he was the baby's father. The court of appeal judges Patrick Kiage, Mumbi Ngugi and Francis Tuiyott sitting at the Kisumu Court of Appeal, empathized with the man, but disagreed that he (the appellant) be compensated by the hospital for not detaining his wife.
