Federal Government Declares Thursday October 1 Public Holiday To Mark 60th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, October 1, as a public holiday to mark the country’s 60th Independence Anniversary.

Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulated all Nigerians on the celebration of the country’s Diamond Jubilee while giving assurances of the government’s commitment to the socio-economic transformation of the country.

This disclosure was contained in a statement which was issued on Tuesday, September 29, and titled, ‘FG Declares Thursday, October 1, 2020, Public Holiday to Mark Nigeria’s 60th Independence Anniversary’.

It was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Georgina Ehuriah on behalf of the Federal Government.
According to the statement, the minister praised Nigerians for the feats in the economy, education, the creative sector, amongst others.

The statement also quoted Aregbesola as saying;
THOUGH CELEBRATING SIXTY YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE REALLY CALLS FOR POMP AND PAGEANTRY, BUT WITH THE GLOBAL COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WHICH HAS FORCED ALL NATIONS IN THE WORLD TO THINK AND ACT CAUTIOUSLY, WE CANNOT AVOID THE IMPERATIVE OF A LOW-KEYED CELEBRATION AT THIS TIME.

He added that;
WHILE WISHING NIGERIANS A FRUITFUL INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION, HE REMINDED THEM OF THE FACT THAT OUR FOUNDING FATHERS, IN SPITE OF THE DIFFERENCES IN FAITH, TRIBE AND TONGUE CAME TOGETHER FOR NIGERIA’S INDEPENDENCE.

Kenyan Law Court dismisses case of man seeking compensation after his wife eloped with another man from hospital

A lawsuit filed by a man seeking to be compensated by St Mary's Mission Hospital in Kenya for allowing his wife to leave the hospital with another man after giving birth, has been struck out by a law court. The appellant had sued the St. Mary's Mission hospital at Kakamega law courts in 2020 seeking general damages from the facility on grounds that the hospital had discharged his wife and allowed her to leave with another man. After delivering and at the time of discharge, the wife of the appellant claimed he was the baby's father. The court of appeal judges Patrick Kiage, Mumbi Ngugi and Francis Tuiyott sitting at the Kisumu Court of Appeal, empathized with the man, but disagreed that he (the appellant) be compensated by the hospital for not detaining his wife. Togo prime Minister Komi Klassou resigns

Togo’s prime minister and his government have resigned, the West African nation’s presidency said late Friday. President Faure Gnassingbe congratulated prime minister Komi Selom Klassou and his team for their “economic, political and social efforts and the encouraging results despite the health crisis around the world”, a statement on the presidency’s official website said. Togo has been due for a political reshuffle since Gnassingbe was reelected in February for a fourth term in office, but changes were delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.
