Buhari govt under attack as Nigerians say no to Social media, hate speech bill

President Muhammadu Buhari administration has come under attack over the social media and hate speech bills.

The Senate on Wednesday passed for second reading a bill for an act to make provision for the protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulations, and for related matters.
The bill, which was sponsored by Senator Musa Mohammed Sani representing Niger East Senatorial District would restrict cyberspace falsehood against any citizen if passed into law.

The bill has since stirred controversies online as Nigerians call on Senators to end its passage, as it is against freedom of speech and democracy.

Some Nigerians took to their Twitter page signing a petition to stop the passage of the bill.
Below are some reactions gathered from Twitter:

@KadariaAhmed “Kadaria Ahmed, say no to the social media bill , it is against the constitution which protects free speech, a vital pillar of our democracy. What say you?

@Fatolafabs “Alright guys, let’s get serious this Social Media Bill of a thing is going to shut us all out of the system. It’s the only voice we have and they want to silence that voice. Please, let’s sign this petition together and say no to social media bill.”

@Solight14 “Nigeria is a drama, they failed to provide the better Nigeria they sworn to create. Now thet want to use social Media bill to shurt us up from complaining. What is the color of our problem?

@Bukkyshonibare “I, Bukky Shonibare, Say no to social media bill. It’s a grievous infringement on the Constitutional right to free speech. We must be able to speak our minds, even when we are wrong or mistaken, without fear of intimidation, harassment or incarceration by the state.”

@Makintamie “It is an attempt to silence Nigerians in order for the govt. to continue to disrespect the rule of Law.”

This might be suspended by the federal government if the public outcry continues.

Oil prices rose, Tuesday on uncertainty over Libyan oil exports, although plans by producer cartel OPEC to raise output loom. Brent sweet crude futures, the international benchmark for oil prices, were at 74.95 dollars per barrel at 01.04 GMT, up 22 cents, or 0.3 per cent from their last close. The United States West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at 68.33 dollars a barrel, up 25 cents, or 0.4 per cent. Traders said prices were mostly driven higher by uncertainty around oil exports by Libya, a member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Eastern Libyan commander, Khalifa Haftar’s forces have handed control of oil ports to a separate National Oil Corporation (NOC) based in the East of the country. The official state-owned oil company based in the capital Tripoli, also called NOC, will not be allowed to handle that oil anymore, he said. In comments later confirmed to the media, Ahmed Mismari, spokesman of Haftar’s Libya National Army...
