Oyo State Government has reiterated its assurance to the people of the state that the administration would not increase tax on business enterprises in order to increase the Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, of the state. The Chairman, Oyo State Internal Revenue Service, OYSIRS, Aremo John Adeleke, stated this in a chat with journalists in his office recently, saying that Governor Seyi Makinde was applying sympathy and empathy in his dealings on the matter since the new administration came to office. According to Adeleke, the government was working assiduously to capture other areas that have not been explored to generate more revenue to the coffers of the state, adding that a culture of efficient and leak-proof collection in all areas of revenue would be put in place. He said, “Instead of tax increment, we are emphasizing efficient collection of existing revenue and we are bringing our informal sector into the tax net. That would apply to the affected MacBook Pros. ”This is to inform all operators and service providers that the carriage of

US House votes again to end Trump’s border emergency declaration

The United States House of Representatives on Friday backed, for a second time, legislation that would terminate Donald Trump’s February declaration of a national emergency on the southern border with Mexico, sending the measure to the White House for the US president’s expected veto. The Democratic-led House passed the joint resolution by 236-174, as 11 Republicans and one independent joined Democrats in casting “yea” votes. The Republican-led Senate approved the measure earlier this week by 54-41. Eleven of the Senate’s 53 Republicans joined Democrats in favouring the resolution. Trump used the very first veto of his presidency this March to strike down a similar measure that had cleared the House and Senate. Congress was unable to muster the two-thirds majorities in both chambers to override that veto and is not expected to do so this time. Trump declared an emergency on the southern border to circumvent Congress and take money already designated for other programmes to pay

PDP asks Lagos assembly probe state allocations from 1999 till date

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter, has demanded a probe of all administrations in the State from 1999 to 2018. The party made the demand in reaction to the recent protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly for the probe of immediate past governor, Akinwunmi Ambode. A statement signed by Taofik Gani, the publicity secretary of the party said, “The PDP states clearly that a holistic probe of the administration of Bola Tinubu, Raji Fashola and Akinwunmi Ambode is what Lagosians actually expect. Lagosians are eager to know the stewardship of their former governors. From 1999 till 2018 over N17 trillion was realised as internally generated revenue (IGR), royalties, federal allocations, investments, crude oil discovery. Unfortunately, much of these monies are linked to hotels, airlines, oil companies and construction companies at home and abroad.” The PDP said the protest for the probe of Ambode lacked sincerity and is aimed at embarrassing him. “The PDP j

UN science panel to report on climate change in oceans and glaciers

Scientists from around the world gathered yesterday in Monaco to release a major report on the impact of global warming on the Earth’s oceans and frozen regions. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scoured almost 7,000 scientific publications to come up with an overview of the effects of greenhouse gases on oceans, glaciers and permafrost regions. Hours ahead of the release of the report, French President Emmanuel Macron said that it contained “naked and stubborn” facts. “We are losing the battle,” he told the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday. The report comes weeks after the UN panel warned of the impact of climate change on land, saying that the world faced a high risk of drought, wildfires, thawing permafrost and unstable food supplies. The IPCC warned last October that limiting global warming to an average temperature rise of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels is only possible with “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedent

Osinbajo threatens to sue over False Allegations

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has threatened to sue Google over ‘false allegations‘ made against him on a YouTube page. A video report published on September 20 on the video-sharing site by Roots TV Nigeria alleged that Mr Osinbajo “used” federal agencies under his supervision as vice president “to stack funds” for 2023 general elections. The allegation is based mainly on a claim made by Katch Ononuju, described in the report as a political analyst. Mr Ononuju in the Roots TV report said there is an “anticipation” that Mr Osinbajo will run for president in 2023. Also on Wednesday, Vanguard newspaper apologised to Mr Osinbajo over a news report alleging that he mismanaged N90 billion said to have been released by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2019 general elections. AGF backs IG on NPF recruitment procedure

The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to allow the Nigeria Police Force conclude the ongoing recruitment of new constables, dealing a crucial blow to the Police Service Commission that has long asserted constitutional powers over recruitment and regulatory obligations of the police. The nation’s chief law officer told the president that a history of rivalry between the two organisations exists, but the Force Headquarters should have its way in the disagreement around the latest recruitment exercise, it was learnt from a presidential memo and administration officials familiar with the matter. He also recommended an urgent amendment to the Police Act, the Police Service Commission (PSC) Act and the Constitution in order to forestall a repetition of the disgraceful rivalry between both institutions. The 2020 recruitment exercise would commence by the end of this year. The legal opinion came as the police force and its reg

Samson Siasia pleads for his mom's release

Nigeria’s former player and coach, Samson Siasia whose mother has been kidnapped for 10 weeks now, pleaded for her release noting she’s sick prior to the occurrence of the incident. Mrs Ogere Siasia, 76, and two others have been held captive since they were seized in Bayelsa, southern Nigeria ten weeks ago, a BBC report stated. But Siasia says the police are no closer to finding her. “The police said it’s been difficult to track these kidnappers, but my great concern is that my mother is very sick,” Siasia told BBC Sport. “For someone who is unwell to be held against her will is not only callous but heartbreaking and sad. “So I can only keep appealing to these guys to please let my mother go. I would like for the government or whoever is capable to help me bring my mother back.” Siasia recently filed an appeal against a life ban for match-fixing, imposed by FIFA. It’s the second time in four years that Mrs Siasia has been kidnapped after she was held by gunmen for 12 da

Senate says it won't interfere in Osinbajo’s ordeal with the Presidency

The Nigerian Senate has distanced itself from the seeming political imbroglio between the President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, saying that the issue was not its concern. The Senate also said that it was not bothered about what was going on at the Presidency, just as it said that the President has the prerogative to assign duties to all those who work with him in the Executive. President Muhammadu Buhari had recently replaced the Economic Management Team (EMT) headed by the Vice President with an Economic Advisory Council (EAC) under the chairmanship of Prof. Doyin Salami. He was also said to have been stripped of some government agencies and parastatals that were hitherto under his supervision as well as having a running battle with some persons in the Presidency. Answering questions from Journalists yesterday, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye, All Progressives Congress, APC, Ekiti South who

Anambra lawmakers reject Prado jeeps, prefer Innoson jeep to save cost

Members of the Anambra State House of Assembly have reportedly rejected Toyota Prado Jeep which the state government was said to be planning to distribute to them for effective discharge of their oversight functions, preferring instead, the locally manufactured Innoson Jeep so as to save cost. The lawmakers were said to have argued that the purchase of Toyota Prado Jeeps to the tune of almost N1billion was an unnecessary waste of funds when a similar vehicle produced by Innoson Motors Limited, Nnewi, would cost much less. The Lawmakers suggested that the Anambra State government should emulate other governors of the South East and South–South zones that have been patronizing the local car manufacturing company, adding that it was improper for Governor Willie Obiano to be patronizing dealers of foreign vehicles when Innoson Motors was located in his state. The chief press secretary to the speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly Mr. Emma Madu, however, said yesterday tha

Manchester City get £1 million settlement from Liverpool over scouting hack

Liverpool paid Manchester City a £1 million ($1.25 million) settlement after their Premier League rivals complained their scouting system had been hacked, according to reports. The Times claimed the confidential agreement took place in September 2013 after City employed computer-espionage experts to see if the system had been spied on. City were said to have alleged their login was used on the Scout7 system on a number of occasions by several Liverpool employees. The settlement came a year after three former City scouts moved to Liverpool. Two of them were alleged by City to have been involved in accessing their database on the Scout7 system on hundreds of occasions over an eight-month period. The Premier League were reported to be unaware of the settlement at the time. It is claimed Liverpool made the payment without the club or any of the individuals accepting any liability or wrongdoing, with the allegations never tested in court. A Liverpool club spokesperson told t

Walmart to stop e-cigarette sales

Walmart will stop selling e-cigarettes because of “regulatory complexity and uncertainty” surrounding the products. CNBC reported on an internal company memo about the change, and Walmart confirmed the news in a statement. “Given the growing federal, state and local regulatory complexity and uncertainty regarding e-cigarettes, we plan to discontinue the sale of electronic nicotine delivery products at all Walmart and Sam’s Club U.S. locations,” says the statement. “We will complete our exit after selling through current inventory.” Walmart’s decision comes after US health officials announced the eighth death due to a mysterious vaping-related lung illness. The first death was reported in August. Since then, several media companies have pulled vaping ads, and policymakers have begun to tighten restrictions in the US and elsewhere. Yesterday, Sens. Mitt Romney (R-UT) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) introduced a bill to ban e-cigarette flavors other than tobacco and apply new taxes to the

Over 650 kids escape death as flood overruns school in Anambra

Over 650 pupils of Ezigbo Primary School in Amansea in Awka North Local Council escaped death at the weekend as flood surged into the school unexpected. This was happening barely a week after schools in Anambra state resumed for the academic session. Elders of Okukwa village where the school is located described the flood as mysterious as the entire premises was submerged thereby preventing the students and their teachers from accessing classrooms. Had the rain fallen during school hours the community would have witnessed a tragedy, they said. This is because prior to the flood, the school authorities had heaped gravels to aid access to the school by teachers and pupils to their classes. But following the flood, only few of them dared pass through the entrance to their classes for fear of been drowned by the water that was surging into the entire classrooms. Speaking on the flooding, the school Headmistress, Mrs. Leticia Umeadi, appealed to the Anambra State ministry of e

FIFA ready to push ahead with Women’s World League plan

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has disclosed that he will push again for the creation of a Women’s World League in spite of having his initial plan blocked inside the organisation. The FIFA president said the success of this year’s women’s World Cup showed that there was an appetite for top level competition and that new tournament needed to be created. “We have to build on the momentum of this fantastic World Cup,” Infantino told a conference on the women’s game. The Swiss official has already announced that the 2023 World Cup will feature 24 nations, up from 16, with the venue to be decided next June. He added that his plan for a global competition for national teams needed to be brought back to life. Infantino said he originally came up with the idea in 2017 and the plan had received “big, big support” from football officials across the world. “We then brought it back to the council of FIFA, where it was, shall I say, put on hold. Or, blocked for probably some sports

Reports from Spain has claimed that the Barcelona squad are ‘losing faith’ in their manager Ernesto Valverde following their defeat to Granada at the weekend. The Blaugrana went down 2-0 in Andalusia on Saturday, the third away game in LaLiga this season in which they have failed to win. It’s seen Barça slip to eighth in the table after five games with Lionel Messi and co already four points behind rivals Real Madrid. And now a story in ESPN has claimed that the squad are rapidly turning on Valverde and that “a number of Barcelona players have begun to lose confidence” in the coach. They cite a source “close to the dressing room” who insists that the team are worried they are “playing without intensity”. However, the club president Josep Maria Bartomeu has reiterated that the board will back Valverde and that only an extended run of bad results would see him sacked.

Man United not better than they were under me- Mourinho

Jose Mourinho blasted Manchester United after their dismal 2-0 defeat at West Ham yesterday, saying they are no better now than they were under his management last season. Goals in either half from Andriy Yarmolenko and Aaron Cresswell consigned United to a second Premier League defeat of the season, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are still without a win on the road domestically. The former united coach admitted that United were poor in the final season which saw him sacked as manager, but he said even the positive additions of Harry Maguire, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka haven’t helped his former side. When asked on Sky Sports if he could find any positives from the performance, Mourinho was blunt. “No,” he said. “I can’t find any. “We were bad last season, but I don’t see any improvement this season, even with three new players. And I have to say, players with a positive impact. “I like the three. I think they are bringing some good quality to the team. But the

A British adventurer has become the first person to fly solo around the world in an open-cockpit gyrocopter - despite nearly being struck by lightning. President Buhari departs for UN General Assembly in USA

President Muhammadu Buhari left the country today for the United States to participate in the on-going Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA74). The session opened on Tuesday, September 17. The President’s participation at this year’s gathering of world leaders is particularly significant as it coincides with Nigeria’s Presidency of UNGA. On June 4, 2019, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, was unanimously elected as the President of UNGA74 – an indication of the country’s high esteem in global reckoning. This marks the second time Nigeria would be occupying that prestigious position following late Maj-Gen. Joseph Nanven Garba’s election during UNGA44 in 1989. The theme for UNGA74 is, “Galvanizing Multilateral Efforts for Poverty Eradication, Quality Education, Climate Action and Inclusion.” The General Debates will kick off on Tuesday, September 24 during which leaders of delegations will present their National Stat
