NSCDC arrests seven suspected oil thieves, recovers 200 drums of crude oil in Cross River

Seven suspected oil thieves have been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Cross River State. The corps also impounded over 200 drums of adulterated crude oil worth over N10 million. The Commandant of Corps in the state, Mr Stephen Lar, while parading the suspects alongside the 200 impounded drums at Jebbs area in Calabar South on Wednesday, said the arrest was made through a tip-off. Lar disclosed that the command had declared zero tolerance for illegal crude activities in the area, adding that the suspects will be prosecuted as soon as investigation is completed. “In keeping with our core mandate of protecting Nigeria’s critical national asset, particularly the oil sector; we carried out an operation early this morning following a tip off. “This channel is being used in carrying bunkering product into the town. Ethiopia gets first female president, Sahle-Work Zewde

Following the sudden resignation of former President Mulatu Teshome on Wednesday,  Ethopia's parliament has appointed a new president. The role has been given to Ms Zewde Sahle-Work, an experienced diplomat who most recently held a position with the United Nations. Her election to the ceremonial position comes a week after Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, appointed a cabinet with half the posts taken up by women. In her acceptance speech, President Sahle-Work spoke about the importance of maintaining peace. She was voted in after the unexpected resignation of her predecessor, Mulatu Teshome yesterday October 24th. Teshome, who has been the East African country’s head of state since October 2013, submitted his letter of resignation to the Ethiopian parliament’s two houses. In the Ethiopian constitution, the post of president is ceremonial with the prime minister holding the political power.

APC: Amosun under fire for attacking Tinubu, Osoba

A group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-West, Progressives Mandate has berated the Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, over his attack on the National Leader of the party, Senator Bola Tinubu. A statement issued on Wednesday by the coordinator of the group, Hon. Biyi Akintayo, stated that Amosun’s outburst against Tinubu and a former governor of Ogun State, Segun Osoba, was unwarranted. On Monday, Amosun while swearing in Mosunmola Dipeolu, Chief Judge of the state, at the government house, Abeokuta, the state capital wondered why Tinubu and Osoba, were silent on the controversy trailing the Ogun governorship primary. Amosun accused the leadership of the party of forging results of the primary election in Lagos. “He (the president) knows that they just went to Lagos, write all results, and that what they did is fraud. If the national working committee or the national chairman said there was any election in Ogun state, it was all fraud,” Amosun said.

Fayose granted N50m bail

The Justice Mojisola Olatoregun-led Federal High Court in Lagos has, Wednesday, granted the immediate past governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose N50 million bail. Fayose is standing trial over an 11-count charge bordering on money laundering, abuse of public office, criminal breach of trust and stealing, up to the tune of N6.9bn preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Recall that Fayose was, Monday, denied bail by the court when he appeared for his trial. The judge had ordered that he be remanded under the EFCC custody and the case adjourned till today. Fayose had pleaded not guilty to the charges against him when they were read to him in court on Monday. However, at the resumed hearing today, the Judge granted the ex-governor a bail of N50 million with two sureties who must issue a N50 million bond in a reputable bank as well as possess three years tax clearance. South African Hip-hop artist, HHP is dead

Veteran South African Hip-hop star, Jabulani Tsambo, popularly known as Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP) has been confirmed dead. The 38-year-old rapper was said to have died on Wednesday afternoon, Daily Sun reports. However, the cause of his death is yet to be disclosed. It was gathered that the rapper had previously spoken out about his battle with depression leading to multiple suicide attempts. Again, Kaduna Govt reviews curfew

As peace gradually returns to Kaduna and environs, curfew hours in the state have been reviewed. A statement issued and signed by Senior Special Assistant to Governor Nasir El-rufai on Media and Publicity, Mr. Samuel Aruwa said effective tomorrow, Thursday, 25th October 2018, residents of Kaduna are free to pursue their legitimate business from 6am to 5pm. He said dusk to dawn curfew will be enforced from 5pm to 6am daily, until further notice. According to him, the Kaduna State Government took the decision to review the curfew hours following a meeting today of a select committee of the State Security Council. Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Director General of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organization (APCO), has revealed how ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, emerged as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate. New minimum wage: NLC, ULC announce nationwide strike

Following the inability of the Federal Government and the labour unions in Nigeria to arrive at meeting point over new minimum wage, the Organised labour has announced that an indefinite nationwide strike will commence November 6. This was contained in a statement on Sunday by President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, and that of the United Labour Congress (ULC). The labour unions are unhappy over government’s claim that no amount was agreed with the labour leaders at a meeting of a tripartite committee as well as the FG’s stance that it could only increase the minimum wage from the current N18,000 to N24,000. According to the labour unions, N30,000 was agreed during negotiation and any amount below the figure would not be accepted. Flood traps Delta residents, cripples commercial activities

Rampaging flood in parts of the country has trapped residents of Gbekebor community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State as it submerged the community completely, DAILY POST can report. At the time of filing this report, stranded residents were seen living in harsh conditions with no assistance coming their way. Educational and business activities including worship centres were not spared as they were forced to close down by the flood. New minimum wage: Labour to take final decision Thursday

The Organised Labour has said it will meet on Thursday, to take a final decision on the new national minimum wage for workers This follows the delay by the Federal Government to announce its figure. Ayuba Wabba, President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), made this known in an interview with NAN on Wednesday in Abuja. Recall that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, had said there was no agreement yet by the Tripartite Committee on the new national minimum wage figure in the country. Senate asks banks to allow up to N40,000 per withdrawal from their ATMs and asks CBN to suspend card maintenance fee

The Senate has passed a resolution calling on the Central Bank of Nigeria to suspend the ATM card maintenance charges being deducted from customers' accounts per month. They also called on commercial banks to configure their machines to dispense up to N40,000 per withdrawal. The Senate made this known via a tweet @SPNigeria. This resolution came as part of a motion on the illicit and excessive bank charges on customers accounts, sponsored by Senator Olugbenga Ashafa, representing Lagos East. Oyo 2019: 3 lawmakers join Ex-governor, Alao-Akala in ADP

Three members of the Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday announced their defections from their various political parties to join a former governor of the state, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala in the Action Democratic Party(ADP) This was disclosed through a letter read by the Deputy Clerk of the House, Mrs. Felicia Foluke Oyediran during the house plenary on Tuesday. In the letter, Hon. Kehinde Oloya (Ibadan North East 1) announced his decision to dump the Accord Party (AP) for the Action Democratic Party (ADP), while Hon. Fayose: EFCC gives update on probe of ex-gov

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, who on Tuesday reported at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) office in Abuja in accordance with his promise is still being interrogated by the commission. Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr Wilson Uwujaren disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday. Mr Mohammed Babandede, Comptroller-General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has said that the issuance of Nigerian Passport with 10 years validity will commence in December, 2018. Babandede made the disclosure when he visited Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State on Monday in Ibadan. The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Mr. Kabiru Adjoto, has raised the alarm over the influx of commercial sex workers in the Benin metropolis. Adjoto, who spoke during a ministerial briefing by the Commissioner for Youths and Special Duties, Mr. Mika Amanokha, in the House on Monday, decried the presence of indecently dressed women around the legislative quarters. He explained that the commercial sex workers, mostly teenagers, milled around the quarters and hotels in the area from 9pm till dawn. Amanokha had said that the information available to him indicated that they (sex workers) were business people. But the Speaker, who did not seem satisfied with the answer, asked, “What kind of business are they transacting? Youths going naked, between the ages of 17 and 18 (and) you say they are in business?” However, the commissioner stated, “Mr. Speaker, I take very strong note of that. Governor Ganduje facing impeachment as Kano Assembly begins probe into bribe videos

The Kano State House of Assembly has opened probe into the bribe-taking videos of the state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje. Raising a matter of urgent public importance on Monday, a member representing Warawa Constituency, Labaran Madari, said the assembly should investigate the authenticity of the video and take measures. Madari stated that the videos had brought the institution of governance in the state to disrepute and therefore the need for the legislators to take urgent action. The matter was seconded by Baffa Dan’Agundi, a member representing Kano Municipal. In response, the Speaker, Alhassan Rurum, constituted a seven-man committee to investigate the matter and report back to the Assembly. There was drama at the Ekiti State Government House on Sunday as outgoing Governor Ayo Fayose wept profusely while vacating the state’s number-one seat. US pastor, Andrew Brunson accused of terrorism in Turkey regains freedom after two years

American pastor, Andrew Brunson who was released yesterday after being detained in Turkey for two years, has landed at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. Brunson is expected to spend a brief time at Ramstein before flying to Washington today where he's expected to meet President Trump. Brunson had been charged with helping to plot a coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A Turkish court on Friday sentenced Brunson to three years and one month in prison, but chose to release him based on his time already served, as well as his manner during the proceedings, his lawyer said. Prosecutors were seeking a 10-year jail term. After his release, Brunson quickly left his home in Izmir, Turkey, and headed to the airport. The House of Representatives on Thursday announced that it had discovered N21 billion and $104.46 million undeclared revenue in two separate accounts outside the Treasury Single Account (TSA). The Managing Director of Heritage Bank, Ifie Sekibo, and his counterpart in Aso Savings and Loans Plc, Hassan Usman, have been summoned to appear before the Ad-hoc Committee investigating TSA management, implementation and level of compliance. The green chamber warned that the duo would be arrested if they failed to appear on a date to be communicated to them next week. FGN plans to sell Polaris bank in two years

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) says it plans to sell Polaris Bank within two years. Ahmed Kuru, Chief Executive Officer, AMCON, said this in an interview with Bloomberg in Lagos. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had revoked the operating licence of Skye Bank in September for failing to meet capital and liquidity requirements. Polaris Bank was subsequently approved as a bridge bank to take on the assets and liabilities of Skye Bank. He said: “We met with the management of Polaris Bank and will sell the financial institution in less than two years.” Kuru added that the authorities intervened in the Skye Bank issue because of “a lot of systemic issues”, including saving more than 5,000 jobs and almost N1 trillion in deposits.
