FIFA Football Awards: Modric wins Best Player ahead of Ronaldo, Salah

Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric, has been named FIFA Best Men’s Player of the Year. Modric won the prize ahead of former team-mate, Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool winger, Mohammed Salah, at a event held in London on Monday night. The Croatia captain enjoyed arguably the best year of his career, as he won a third consecutive Champions League trophy, before reaching the World Cup final. Modric went on to win the Golden Ball award for the best player in the World Cup after Croatia’s final defeat by France. He said after receiving the award, “It is a great honour and a beautiful feeling to stand here with this amazing trophy. Nigeria’s first female banker, Sarah Morocco-Clarke is dead

Sarah Adenike Morocco-Clarke, Nigeria’s first female banker is dead. Morocco-Clarke died at the age of 80 on Sunday, 16 September 2018, after a short illness. Sarah Morocco-Clarke, an alumnus of Queen’s College Lagos, started her career with First Bank (then Bank of British West Africa, and subsequently Standard Bank) as a pioneer female employee, and rose through the ranks at First Bank Nigeria and was made the Services Manager and Secretary to the South Administration, wherein she had a mandate that covered the services of all the First Bank branches in Southern Nigeria. While she worked in the banking industry, she was manager of numerous First Bank branches in Lagos and was subsequently made a Regional Manager in charge of Bendel, Ogun and Oyo states. She was also an Area Manager in the Western part of Nigeria. Popularly known as the ‘Iron Lady, Morocco-Clarke leaves behind six successful children, thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

NFF Elective Congress: Pinnick pledges to reconcile with losers

The President, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mr Amaju Pinnick, has pledged to reconcile with those who lost at the 2018 NFF Elective Congress held in Katsina . Pinnick was speaking after the announcement of election results by the Chairman, NFF Electoral Committee, Mr Mohammed Sani-Katu. He said that there was no winner, no vanquish during the election, hence the need for all to come and join hands to fulfill their promises and make a progress. The NFF president thanked all those who contributed to the success of the exercise in one way or the other. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Pinnick scored 34 votes to beat other contestants Aminu Maigari polled eight votes to emerge second, Taiwo Ogunjobi got two votes, while Chinedu Okoye had no vote during the election. Ras Kimono’s wife, Mena Okedi passes away

Efemena Okedi, the wife of the late reggae icon, Ras Kimono, has been reported dead. Okedi is said to have died in the early hours of Sunday at her residence in Magodo Isheri, Lagos, Pulse reports. Okedi’s death was confirmed by Michael Odiong, project manager at Premier Music. Okedi was the third wife of the music legend and also Kimono’s manager and a member of his band while she was alive. Her death comes three months after her husband passed away in a Lagos hospital.

Marc Marquez extends MotoGP lead in Aragon

Spain’s Marc Marquez, riding a Honda, won Sunday’s Aragon MotoGP to extend his lead atop the championship standings. Marquez, after two second and one third placed finishes in the last three MotoGP races, finished in 41min 55sec ahead of Italian duo Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) and Andrea Ianonne (Suzuki). Marquez now has 246 points in the MotoGP standings, with Dovizioso second on 174 and Yamaha’s Italian veteran Valentino Rossi in third (159).

INEC announces date for rerun in 4 local governments

Following the inconclusive nature of the September 22 gubernatorial election in Osun State, in which the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP led by 353, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced Thursday, September 27 as the new date for rerun. According to the commission, the rerun will be conducted in some of the units in which votes were cancelled for alleged irregularities. The affected local governments are : Orolu, Osogbo, Ife South and Ife North, making four local governments in all. INEC had earlier announced the final results of the governorship election, with candidate of PDP leading with a total votes of 254, 698, while APC polled 254,345 to come second in the exercise. The returning officer for the governorship election, Prof. Joseph Adeola, who announced the results reeled out the total number of valid votes to be 767,955 and rejected votes to be 47,843. Osun election: US govt speaks on governorship poll

The United States Government has called for a peaceful conclusion of the Osun State governorship election. Speaking in an interview with Channels TV on Sunday, the Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States Embassy in Nigeria, David Young, appealed to candidates of political parties and their supporters to be peaceful and respect the final results of the Osun State governorship elections that will be announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the coming days. He said: “We request and urge all supporters to be peaceful as this process moves forward. This is part of democracy. “We at the United States have had very close elections too. I urge people to be peaceful and respect the result that comes out in the time ahead.” The US envoy also commended INEC for the conduct of the election. He urged all political parties and agents to allow the electoral body to do its job.
